• WHAT ARE MICROGREENS?

Microgreens are the young seedlings (shoots) of newly germinated, edible plants, such as broccoli, red cabbage and radish. These young shoots are up to nine times denser in nutrients, antioxidants and polyphenols, than their older, larger plants, making them not only very tasty but also bursting with health benefits. Microgreens, like all edible plants that are part of a good balanced diet, contain vitamins – B1, C, E and K, as well as essential minerals such as iron, magnesium, zinc, calcium,  phosphorus and potassium. As with all green vegetables, they contain beta carotene that your body uses to make vitamin A. Whether you need to boost your immune system, kickstart your energy levels or give your gut the right conditions for a diverse gut microbiota, Teeny Greeny has a mighty Microgreen seed mix for you.

WHY ARE MICROGREENS CONSIDERED A SUPERFOOD?

Microgreens have high nutritional density, and are up to 40x more nutritiously dense than their mature versions. Microgreens contain many vitamins and minerals and are eaten for their health benefits.

WHAT MAKES MICROGREENS SO GOOD FOR ME?

All Microgreens are good sources of :

    • Beta carotene, from which the body makes vitamin A –for eyesight, immune system and healthy skin.

    • Carotenoids –lutein and zeathanthin – also for eyesight.
Vitamin C –to make collagen for blood vessel walls and joints, and to help absorb iron from the diet.

    •Vitamin K –for blood clotting.

•Calcium –for healthy bones and teeth and muscle contraction.

•Polyphenols (formerly called Antioxidants) – mop up free radicals and so reduce risk of cancer.

    • In addition to the nutrients listed above, each Microgreen has a good source of other nutrients, see our benefits page for more info.

Some research has indicated that just being in the general proximity of plants can be beneficial for our mental health. Growing your own greens gives you something tangible to focus on. Growing plants gives you the opportunity to be creative, while also helping to reduce stress.  You can involve children in growing these seeds and, as well as them learning where some of their food originates, they can learn about germination and photosynthesis. Children can also learn that plants are essential for life. Plants take in carbon dioxide and water to make food and then make and release oxygen as a by-product.

CAN MICROGREENS BE GROWN ALL YEAR-ROUND?

Microgreens are incredibly easy to grow, even for the least green-fingered of people! Whether you live in a studio apartment or a sprawling mansion, you only need a small space to place your kitchen windowsill garden. There’s no need to worry about seasons – these little wonders grow all year round! Our Microgreens are organically produced and are completely free from toxins, so with just a little bit of love, time and attention, your clever little Microgreens will soon become food for your plate. All you need to do, once they are sown, is make sure they stay hydrated by watering them daily, but taking care not to over water them.

HOW LONG DO MICROGREENS TAKE TO GROW BEFORE I CAN HARVEST AND EAT THEM?

Microgreens typically grow very quickly and can be harvested in as little as 7 to 21 days after planting, depending on the type of seeds used. Generally, they are ready to harvest when they have developed their first true leaves, which appear after the initial seed leaves. Common microgreens, like radish, rocket, kale and broccoli can usually be harvested around the 7-10 day mark. All the kits we have created contain the fastest growing Microgreens and they all grow at a similar rate.

  • ARE YOUR MICROGREENS GLUTEN FREE? OR ARE YOUR SEEDS ARE FREE FROM CONTAMINATION BY ANY GLUTEN CONTAINING GRAINS?

Microgreens are dicots and do not contain gluten. Wheat is a monocot and the gluten is only in its seeds. No one is eating the seeds but all the Microgreens are gluten free. In relation to our organic seed supplier and their "cleaning" process of their seeds: “we always do our best with various cleaning processes obtaining a purtiry of 99.5%. However seeds can always contain traces of: cereals, mustard, sesame, celery, soya.  These mentioned seeds are the most common off-type during harvest period so it can happen that you find something in seeds, also if it is rare”.

    HOW IMPORTANT ARE GROW LIGHTS?

A lamp could be harmful as some lamps also give off heat as well a slight and so using a lamp could cause seedlings to dry up or just be at too hot a temperature, which causes enzymes to denature; if the illumination is too bright it can bleach the chlorophyll, preventing photosynthesis.  Or, at slightly temperatures, a phenomenon known as photorespiration occurs where oxygen competes for the active site of the rubisco enzyme in the Calvin cycle stage of photosynthesis and prevents carbon dioxide attaching, so the plants cannot make food and grow.  The seedlings also need periods of light and dark, not continuous light.

    HOW DO I USE MICROGREENS?

You can add them to salads, smoothies, sprinkle them over soups, stir them into stews and add them to stir-fries, curries, risottos, pasta bakes and casseroles – the sky’s the limit!

SHOULD I USE MIRACLE GROW OR OTHER PLANT FOOD?

All the nutrients that these Microgreens need are in the seeds and as the shoots are harvested very early in the plants’ life cycle, there is no need for any type of fertiliser. In fact, use of fertiliser will be counterproductive as it will lower the water potential of the water being added to the seeds and seedlings and may reduce the ability of the roots and root hairs to take up, via osmosis, the required amount of water.  Fertiliser of any sort is not needed for seeds or young seedlings, for any plants not just Microgreens.

CAN I EAT MICROGREENS IF I HAVE ALLERGIES OR OTHER HEALTH PROBLEMS?

If you are allergic to any vegetable, for example radishes, then don’t eat radish microgreens as it is quite likely that whatever it is in radishes that you are immune to, may also be present in the radish leaves. Do not grow tomato seeds as Microgreens as tomato leaves will contain a toxin.

CAN YOU TELL ME HOW MUCH SHOULD I EAT OR WHAT THE RDA IS TO REAP THE FULL BENEFITS?

A tray generally yields 30g, the amount we use to sell in punnets when growing commercially.

If you were to eat as the fully grown plant would mean over a KG, due to the fact of concentrated nutrients.

So even if you added half a tray into a smoothie/meal that would be like 500g of Greens.

As the nutrients is 40X not 40% so you would need to eat 40 x 100g of kale for example which is 4 kg of kale to receive the same nutrients.

(Obviously you can eat 500-1000g of broccoli/Kale/Red Cabbage for example but it takes a lot of fuel energy to cook, not to mention grow and prepare!)

    ARE YOUR SEEDS ORGANIC?

Yes, all our seeds are organic.  We are regulated by the Soil Association.

It’s crucial that companies labelling their products as "organic" obtain certification to uphold trading standards in the UK. Certification ensures adherence to strict guidelines, this gains consumer trust and by supporting organisations like the Soil Association, which plays a pivotal role in maintaining clean and sustainable food chains.
Without this certification, these charitable organisations would lack essential resources to ensure the integrity and reliability of organic claims, potentially misleading consumers and compromising the integrity of the organic food industry.

WHY DO YOU USE PEAT-FREE COIR?

We are certified organic and adhere to organic practices. We are also regulated by DEFRA and there have been targets set to phase out the use of peat due to the impact it has on the environment. Peat was formed by the partial decay of plant matter (mosses, sedges and shrubs) in acid and anaerobic conditions. This process took thousands of years so peat isn’t a renewable resource, thus making it unsustainable. Peat sequesters (stores) a lot of carbon and, when it is mined and used, it releases a lot of carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, into the atmosphere. Peat also holds a lot of water and is an important source of drinking water as it provides nearly 4% of all potable water in peat reservoirs. Therefore, the intensive mining of peat has adverse effects on the climate, and destroys valuable ecosystems. Many rare and endangered species live in and around peat bogs and these are having their way of life threatened so we do all we can to promote the use of peat-free growing media. Many eco-systems, plants and animals thrive in peat bogs and, once the peat has been harvested from the bog, habitats are destroyed. In simple terms, this is like chopping down a rainforest and destroying the habitats within that forest. Peat also has the ability to retain water and is responsible for expanding wetlands and the associated habitats within them.

WHAT MAKES THIS AN ‘ECO’ PRODUCT?

We are committed to working with people who align with Teeny Greeny’s values of being responsible, sustainable and ethical. *We are regulated by the Soil Association, the primary charity and organic certification body. What they say goes. An accreditation from them is the cherry on top of a jolly delicious cake. They are incredibly supportive of our mission, which ties in with their own: - protecting the natural world and farm animals. *We also are governed under DEFRA, a government organisation dedicated to protecting the environment. These guys are kind of a big deal and they regulate our business. *All our products are vegan-friendly, meaning no animals have suffered. *Plastic-free/Biodegradable/Recyclable, everyone needs to do their bit for the environment, so we’ve gone above and beyond to make sure our products make as little impact on the planet as possible. It’s a small effort to make for a big cause. *We have FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certification, which is a very special award that we take super-seriously. Our bamboo and other forest products have been harvested from forests that have been well-managed. Our materials have social benefits and an environmental conscience. So, pop a gold star onto your chest while sowing your seeds, safe in the knowledge that you are planting with a clear conscience.

HOW LONG DO YOUR SEEDS KEEP BEFORE I HAVE TO USE THEM?

For best results, sow your seeds soon after getting them - why wait? But if stored in a cool, dry place away from damp, they’ll stay viable for a long time. In fact, in 2005, scientists successfully germinated 2,000-year-old Judean date palm seeds excavated from an ancient site in what is now referred to as Israel - proof that seeds can hold onto life for a very long time.

WHY ARE PRODUCTS OUT OF STOCK & WHEN WILL THEY BE AVAILABLE?

We make all our kits by hand in small batches in alignment with the UK growing season. Should you find that a particular product is currently unavailable make sure you join our email list and we will notify our community when they next become available.

CAN I USE OTHER GROWING MEDIUM?

Yes, you can use almost any compost you may have, or growing felt, or even kitchen paper, just remember to adjust watering accordingly.

    HOW OFTEN DO I WATER?

Water every morning and evening. Using a rose watering can and water lightly from above whilst the seeds are still sprouting then, when they have leaves, water from the side (tipping the tray or pot at an angle to pour the water from the side and letting the water flow to other side).

WHAT IS THE BEST TEMPERATURE FOR MICROGREENS?

After uncovering your germinated Microgreens from the ‘seed-of-life’ germination cover included in your kit and leave at room temperature or a warm dark area like an airing cupboard for 3-5 days and keep checking to make sure the coir hasn’t dried too much; if it feels very dry then sprinkle some more water onto the seeds and replace the cover until you start to notice the seeds germinating. Optimum temperature is 20-22o

CAN I REFILL MY MICROFARM WITH SEEDS & COIR?

Yes we offer seeds and coir here

    WHAT EXPERIENCE DO YOU HAVE?

Teeny Greeny started life as part of a first-generation small urban farm in the beautiful Wiltshire countryside. Now we invest all our experience into creating fun and nutritious organic seed sets that will flourish on anyone’s windowsill! Our aim is to equip more families with the tools they need to grow their own Microgreens, not only for the convenience of having fresh, delicious ingredients and garnishes to brighten up their food, but also for the health and wellbeing rewards that this offers.

  • WHEN DO I HARVEST THEM?

Usually we like to see the third leaf and most of the Microgreens will be ready to be harvested when they reach 5cm+ in height.

    HOW DO I HARVEST?

Once your Microgreens reach 5 cm+ in length from their base. Then either snip with scissors or use a sharp knife to harvest your Microgreens.

WHAT IF I LEAVE THEM TOO LONG?

They can be eaten but may taste a little bitter and the leaves will be a bit coarser.

  • CAN I HARVEST THE SAME CROP TWICE?

Second harvests are generally weaker and the re-growth is sparser, however it can be done. We would recommend one harvest per crop and then disposing of the soil responsibly and replanting new seeds for the next batch.

SHOULD I WASH MY MICROGREENS BEFORE EATING?

No need to wash, unless you’ve sprayed the Microgreens with any nasties!

  • MY SEEDS WON'T GERMINATE!

A reason for this could be temperature or too little water. Most seeds require warmth for germination (coriander is one variety that prefers cooler temperatures). Try putting your tray of Microgreens seeds in a warm room but make sure your surface doesn't dry out. It could be that your surface and seeds are not moist enough. If you are meant to soak your seeds (pea & sunflower) try soaking them for a few hours longer. Mist spray regularly to make sure everything is moist. If all else fails, email us at hello@teenygreeny.co.uk and we will advise you.

    DO MY MICROGREENS HAVE MOULD?

Mould is a common occurrence in dark moist environments. Most Microgreens produce small fuzzy white root hairs. These are to increase the surface area for water uptake and can be mistaken for mould but they are NOT mould. Mould fungi look like a long stringy spiderweb creeping across the surface of the soil. There are several ways you can combat mould. The most effective is with 3 - 6% Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2) solution . This can be purchased from most pharmacies and is a standard anti-mould remedy for Microgreens. Fill a bottle with a few mL of H2O2 and top up with water to spray them. You only need a small amount of solution. Be careful not to get the concentrated H2O2 on your hands. Shake to mix and spray on the affected area daily until you don't see any more mould growing. Usually one of two applications is all you need. Hydrogen peroxide is used on wounds as an antiseptic and an anti bacterial. It is also a bleaching agent so don’t get it on your hair or clothes. It is considered suitable for organic gardening as it breaks down very quickly. It can be corrosive when concentrated so be extra careful with your skin and eyes and especially around young children. Store it in a dark location as it degrades when exposed to light.  If you have used it then rinse your harvested Microgreens well before eating them.  Do not use it on plants that have been exposed to light as it can burn their leaves. Mould will usually die off when exposed to light and when there is lot of air flow. If your greens are nearly ready for light, just uncover them. Place them beside an open sunny window and the mould will die off quickly as the Microgreen leaf surfaces dry out. An alternative to hydrogen peroxide is a teaspoon of baking powder mixed with water in your spray bottle. Vinegar or lemon juice, mixed 50/50 with water and then sprayed on the affected area, can be effective as well.

  • MY MICROGREENS KEEP BENDING TO ONE SIDE

They are receiving light from one side and making a growth response called phototropism.  Rotate the tray so that the other sides of the shoots get light and they will bend back again.  Rotate the tray through 180 degrees each day or put it in a position where it gets all round light.

WHY ARE MY GREENS LIGHT IN COLOUR?

They will always start off yellow/light in colour before they reach the light. Photosynthesis is the process by which plants use sunlight to convert carbon dioxide and water into glucose and oxygen. This vital process occurs in the chloroplasts of plant cells, which contain the green pigment chlorophyll. Chlorophyll absorbs light energy, which powers the photosynthesis reaction. When greens are young, they often appear light in color because their chloroplasts and chlorophyll are still developing. As the plants mature and the chlorophyll concentration increases, the greens become darker. This progression ensures that the plants can maximize their energy production from sunlight as they grow.

MY SEEDLINGS HAVE LONG STEMS AND YELLOW LEAVES.

You kept them in the dark for too long.  Plants need light to make the green pigment, chlorophyll. If they are kept in the dark for too long then they respond by growing taller too fast and remain/become yellow.  They have become etiolated.  If you put them in the light they will become green but best to make sure you take them out of a dark place as soon as they have germinated.

    WHY ARE THEY FLOPPING ?

If your Microgreens start to ‘flop’ they do not have enough water and you need to give them water.

I DON’T KNOW HOW MANY SEEDS TO PLANT?

Sprinkle some of the seeds, evenly, on top of the coir. Use one of the seed varieties included in your kit for each tray/pot. We have included a wooden spoon for more accuracy - average covering = 1-3 wooden spoonfuls per bamboo growing tray or a teaspoon will do!

WHY ARE MY MICROGREENS CLUMPING TOGETHER?

You have planted them too densely, refer to instructions or check helpful videos on our youtube channel.

CAN I GET MORE HELP GROWING?

Yes - please check our all our playlists on our youtube channel here. There are playlists for each seed included in our Microfarm Kits and also a 7 part step-by-step using our Micrology Kits. https://www.youtube.com/@teenygreeny/playlists

  • CAN I FEED MICROGREENS TO MY DOG?

Yes! Many microgreens, such as broccoli, kale, and sunflower, can be a healthy addition to your dog’s diet. They’re packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Just make sure to introduce them slowly, monitor for any reactions, and avoid varieties like onion or garlic microgreens, which can be harmful to dogs.

ARE MICROGREENS SAFE FOR MY CAT?

Definitely! Microgreens like wheatgrass, broccoli, and pea shoots are safe for cats and can provide extra nutrients. Cats often enjoy nibbling on greens, but as with any new food, start with a small amount and observe your cat for any unusual reactions. Avoid giving them microgreens from the allium family (like onion and garlic), as those are toxic to cats.

    CAN MY RABBITS EAT MICROGREENS?

Yes, rabbits can enjoy a variety of microgreens! Leafy greens like kale, broccoli, and pak-choi microgreens are great options alongside alfalfa. Microgreens can be a nutritious supplement to their regular diet of hay, vegetables, and pellets. Just ensure they’re pesticide-free and avoid giving them any microgreens that are harmful to rabbits, such as onion or leek.

  • ARE MICROGREENS GOOD FOR MY BIRD?

Birds love microgreens! Varieties like sunflower, wheatgrass, and chia are safe and nutritious for most birds. They’re a fantastic way to add more vitamins and minerals to their diet. Just be sure the microgreens you’re feeding are free of pesticides and other harmful chemicals.

    CAN TORTOISES EAT MICROGREENS?

Yes, most tortoises can eat microgreens, especially leafy ones like rocket, mustard greens, and clover. These can be a wonderful addition to their diet, offering a nutrient boost. Always introduce new foods gradually, and be sure to avoid any toxic plants like garlic or onion microgreens.

ARE THERE ANY MICROGREENS I SHOULD AVOID FEEDING MY PETS?

While many microgreens are safe and nutritious for pets, some, like onion, garlic, and leeks, should be avoided. These can be toxic to cats, dogs, and other animals. Always research the type of microgreens you’re growing to ensure they’re safe for your specific pet.

  • CAN I GET E-COLI FROM MICROGREENS?

Having grown commercially and regulated by the foods standards agency & local authorities health & hygiene I fully understand peoples concerns over e-coli risk. Implications that if any food, greens or otherwise come into contact with contaminated water (drag water from cattle lots or water contaminated by other sources), can be a serious risk to contracting e-coli. This is the most common source of e-coli. Neither of which were an issue whilst I was an urban farmer, and will not be an issue for anyone using Teeny Greeny Kits to grow Microgreens at home, as water should be used from the tap and we provide organic, peat-free coir, which will not have any living microorganisms present, other soil or compost may have if it is from an unkown source and not steralised.

WHERE CAN I FIND MORE RESOURCES?

WHAT'S THE TRUE VALUE OF YOUR SEEDS?

At first glance, seed prices can be hard to compare. Packet sizes, seed counts, and quality vary widely. Here’s what that looks like side by side.

    Teeny Greeny® seed bags (£4.95)

    > Approx. 6,000 organic seeds per bag

    > Enough for 4+ full microgreen grows

    > Certified organic, selected specifically for microgreens

By comparison, many garden centre seed packets:

    > Contain around 300 seeds

    > Are often non-organic

    > Cost around £1.95 per packet

That means you’d need multiple packets to match the quantity in just one Teeny Greeny seed bag.

HOW THIS ADDS UP ACROSS OUR PRODUCTS

    Small Tin Kits (£14.95)

Each tin includes: Approx. 3,000 seeds, Coir growing medium, Wooden spoon, Clear printed instructions, Ethically sourced, plastic-free packaging. All hand-packed in small batches.

    Microfarm Kits (£49.95)

Our larger kits include: 6 x Reusable bamboo trays, 3 recyclable seed tins, Each tin contains approx. 6,000 seeds.

That’s around 18,000 seeds per kit, designed for repeat growing, not just one harvest.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN IN REAL TERMS?

When we operated as an urban farm, we sold fresh microgreens at: £3.50 per 30g punnet

Growing at home with Teeny Greeny:

    > Gives you fresher greens, harvested minutes before eating
    > Allows multiple harvests from the same seeds
    > Can save hundreds of pounds a year compared to buying shop-bought microgreens.

And you’re not just buying seeds. You’re investing in:

    > Organic growing

    > Reusable materials

    > Small-batch, UK packing

    > A business committed to people and planet

    A FINAL NOTE ON VALUE

As a small independent business, Teeny Greeny® focuses on doing things properly, not cheaply. That means generous seed quantities, thoughtful materials, and products designed to be used again and again.

Better value isn’t about the lowest price.

It’s about how much you can grow, how often, and how fresh it is when you eat it.

ARE YOUR SEEDS TESTED FOR PATHOGENS AND CONTAMINANTS?

Yes all our seeds are tested and have full traceability. When you are sourcing seeds and growing medium please make sure you look out for Defra regulated companies, and ideally Organic Certified.

I HAVE IBS - CAN I EAT MICROGREENS?

As Microgreens are young plants there is less fibre per unit mass in microgreens compared to vegetables from mature plants.  100g of microgreens, such a sunflower and basil, contain 2.1 g fibre whereas 100g kale has 4.1 g fibre.  In addition you do not need to eat as much mass of microgreens as you do of other vegetables,  as they are nutrient dense.

During germination, seeds will produce enzymes to convert the starch (in endosperm) to simpler sugar molecules which can be quickly utilised by the baby plant. Therefore, these flavourful microgreens can be digested and absorbed by us easily.

After consulting with a professional we would say give them a go. Introduce small amounts at first and see if there are any adverse effects.

The microgreens listed below are low in FODMAP. Which means that they are easily digestible and less likely to give you discomfort.

Radish, Kale, Rocket, Cabbage & Broccoli

Seeds for this suggestion would be the Vitality which has Cabbage, Broccoli & Radish - great for gut health.

DO YOU HAVE LINKS TO THE RESEARCH FOR NUTRITIONAL CLAIMS?

Yes please check this link here for a link to all research, our editors bio and more science backed information - https://teenygreeny.co.uk/pages/health-benefits-of-microgreens

I AM A SERIAL PLANT KILLER - WILL THIS WORK FOR ME?

We've converted thousands of plant killers into successful growers! Sharing our knowledge from urban farming we have created inclusive fool proof instructions and also have videos available that you can access should you need extra guidance. We also have a private facebook group you will be invited to join.

I TRAVEL A LOT FOR WORK. CAN I STILL GROW MICROGREENS?

Absolutely! If you're able to, you can take your microgreens with you on your travels (some of our community members do!). However, if that's not an option, you can still grow them when you're home for a week or more. After the initial germination phase (which usually takes 2-3 days), they need daily watering once they're exposed to light. As long as you're home to give them some daily care after germination, you can enjoy fresh microgreens. Another option is to grow a batch, harvest them, and then wait to plant your next batch until you're back.

HOW DO I DISPOSE OF THE GROWING MEDIUM AFTER HARVESTING MICROGREENS?

After harvesting your microgreens, there's not a lot of growing medium left to dispose of. Here are some options for disposal:

    1. Compost Bin: If you have access to a compost bin, this is the ideal way to dispose of the growing medium.
    2. General Waste: You can place it in your regular household trash if composting isn't an option.
    3. Allotments: If you know someone with an allotment, they might be happy to take it off your hands.
    4. Courtyard Garden: I sometimes leave it in my courtyard garden for birds to pick at.

I also have videos on YouTube where you can see how much growing medium is left after harvesting. This might give you a better idea of what to expect.

CAN MICROGREENS HELP PEOPLE WITH CROHN'S DISEASE?

Microgreens can be a great addition to the diet for people with Crohn’s disease. These young plants are nutrient-dense and easier to digest than mature vegetables, thanks to their tender fibres. They also contain antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds, which may support gut health and reduce inflammation.

WHAT MICROGREENS WOULD YOU RECOMMEND FOR OVER ACTIVE THYROID (GRAVES DISEASE)?

If you're managing an overactive thyroid or Graves' disease, it's important to choose microgreens that support overall hormone balance and are naturally anti-inflammatory. While microgreens aren't a cure, they can be a nutritious and gentle addition to your diet. We’d recommend:

Broccoli microgreens – Rich in sulforaphane, which may help support detox pathways and reduce inflammation. Some research suggests cruciferous vegetables can be beneficial for thyroid autoimmunity when eaten in moderation.

Red cabbage microgreens – Another brassica that's high in antioxidants and gentle on the gut.

We’d suggest avoiding mustard or radish microgreens if you’re sensitive to spicy foods or stimulants, as they can sometimes feel too "hot" or intense when your metabolism is already racing.

As always, check in with a healthcare provider before changing your diet, especially with a thyroid condition. Everyone’s biochemistry is different, and it’s best to make dietary decisions with your unique needs in mind.

We do have Broccoli and Red Cabbage in our Brassica Seed Set

  • CAN I TRACK THE NUTRITIONAL VALUES OF YOUR MICROGREENS ON MyFitnessPal OR OTHER FOOD TRACKING APPS?

MyFitnessPal doesn’t currently allow small businesses like ours to submit nutritional data, but you can manually add a custom food entry. The best way to track microgreens is to search for "Mixed Microgreens" as a guide.

For reference, the average nutritional values per 100g of microgreens are:

    Calories: 15 kcal

    Net Carbs: 2g

    Protein: 3g

    Fat: 0g

A handful of microgreens is usually 10-15g, depending on the variety (radish is slightly denser than rocket).

If you use the Zoe app, microgreens score 100, making them an excellent choice for gut health and overall nutrition.

    ISN'T IT JUST CRESS?

Unfortunately we don’t sell Cress seeds - there are 3 types of Cress - Watercress, Garden Cress and Nasturtium.

Confusingly, the term ‘cress’ also has a second meaning. Once a sprout grows its first leaves, it becomes a cress. Microgreens are harvested when they have developed their first set of leaves.

But, cress can be a great place to start, once a sprout grows its first leaves, it becomes a cress. Those first leaves are called cotyledons, and they're different from a plant's 'true' leaves. Microgreens are harvested when they have developed their first set of 'true' leaves. Depending on the Kit you choose we have over 16 varieties of Microgreens available.

DO YOUR GROWING POTS HAVE HOLES AT THE BASE IF NOT WHY NOT?

Our growing pots do not have holes in. Growing commercially we use large trays with holes and bottom water. From our experience growing this way we have designed the kits to be grown indoors in smaller spaces which is different from growing commercially. You only put in a small amount of water in each day and the microgreens drink it up pretty quickly so no drainage is needed.

    MICROGREENS & KETO DIET

Eating less than 50 grams of carbohydrates a day is eating less than four slices of bread.

And according to the Mayo Clinic “meeting the diet’s requirements means cutting out many healthy foods, making it difficult to meet your micronutrient needs.”

Unlike mature plants, microgreens respire during the germination process.

Cotyledon cells in the “seed leaves” metabolise stored carbohydrates and do so until they drain carbohydrate resources, and the seedling is mature.

As it depletes carbohydrate sources, the cotyledons wither.

Since growers harvest microgreens at the cotyledon stage, they contain very little carbohydrates.

Most microgreens are low in carbs which means this is where Microgreens excel!

Scientists consider microgreens to be live food and they contain a wide range of vital life force nutrients (e.g., vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and oxygen), live enzymes, and a great source of antioxidants.

They may help you extend Keto diets by meeting your micronutrient needs as suggested by the Mayo Clinic.

Microgreens such as Rocket, Broccoli, Pak Choi, Red Cabbage, Kale and radish are all good Microgreen choices if you are following a Keto diet.

    CAN I FREEZE MICROGREENS?

Like most foods, microgreens can be frozen in order to preserve them for a later time. However, freezing microgreens does significantly alter the taste and texture of the greens. When thawed, they will no longer the the crisp, tender greens that they were before they went in the freezer. Just imagine what frozen spinach is like when it is thawed.

If you are going away and do not want to waste your grown Microgreens you could blend them with some olive oil to make a pesto and then freeze into an ice-cube tray then pop them out and stir them through pasta at a later date!

    ARE MICROGREENS SAFE TO EAT?

Yes! Microgreens and sprouts are safe to eat when grown, handled, and stored properly. While it’s true that some plants produce natural chemicals as a defence mechanism when they are young, these are typically present at very low and safe levels in edible varieties like broccoli, radish, and pea shoots. However, certain plants, like tomatoes, have compounds that can be harmful at this early stage, which is why we don’t grow or sell microgreens from those varieties. At Teeny Greeny, we carefully select only the safest and most nutritious microgreens, using clean growing practices to ensure our products are fresh and safe to eat. Always source your microgreens from a trusted provider to enjoy their benefits safely!

WHAT DO YOUR SEEDS HAVE THAT PACKETS FROM A GARDEN CENTRE DON'T HAVE?

Teeny Greeny® seeds are chosen, packed, and sized specifically for growing microgreens at home, which makes them very different from standard garden centre packets.

All of our seeds are certified organic by the Soil Association, meaning they’re grown without synthetic chemicals or pesticides and selected with both people and planet in mind.

Rather than small paper packets that often contain 50–300 seeds, our seed sets and kits include generous quantities, ranging from around 3,000 to 18,000 seeds, depending on the product. This allows for multiple grows, repeat harvests, and far better value over time.

Our varieties are also selected specifically for microgreen performance. Many are not commonly found in garden centres, giving you a broader and more interesting mix of flavours, colours, and textures suited to indoor growing.

Seeds are stored in reusable, eco-friendly tins, which help protect freshness and longevity when kept cool and dry, while supporting our commitment to plastic-free packaging.

As a small, independent, woman-owned and led business, everything is packed by hand in small batches using ethically sourced materials. And if something doesn’t go to plan, our Happy Harvest Guarantee means we’re here to help you succeed.

Growing well shouldn’t be complicated. It should feel generous, thoughtful, and reassuring, from the very first sow.

CAN YOU GOW CHIA SEEDS AS MICROGREENS?

Chia seeds will sprout, but they don’t grow like traditional microgreens.

When watered, chia seeds form a natural gel coating. This causes them to stick together and grow as a dense mat rather than upright shoots. Because of this, they’re usually grown without soil and harvested very young, more like sprouts.

Traditional microgreens such as broccoli, kale, rocket or radish grow upright in soil or a growing medium and are harvested once the first true leaves appear. They’re easier to manage, have better airflow, and produce a cleaner snip-and-enjoy harvest.

If you’re looking for reliable, flavour-packed microgreens, we recommend using varieties specifically selected for microgreen growing.
