Smorgasbord - A disorganised assortment of things (wordhippo.com)
I stumbled across microgreens during lockdown, when, like half the country, I started a food blog. I jumped down a wormhole, looking for ways to enhance my dishes and to make them stand out amongst a plethora of new food blogs. I wanted to make my food sexy. Some hours later I emerged with an extensive list, the top of which was microgreens. Eager to garnish my food with these tiny little plants, I placed an order with Teeny Greeny. Out of the suppliers that I researched, I was drawn to Teeny Greeny because the product is 100% organic, eco-friendly, plastic free and sustainable, I also loved that it was a women-owned small business. Three cheers for Alice Hip Hip Horray….

My delivery arrived promptly, well packaged, and full of little tins of seeds that I set about planting immediately. I was surprised at how quickly the seeds germinated, and within a week or so I was snipping away. As predicted, my food looked marvellous, and my Instagram followers increased. I began to add microgreens to most meals, enjoying the addition of colour, the burst of freshness and the lovely comments that I received from my social media followers. Little did I know that I was also giving my gut a healthy treat, growing my gut flora and adding essential vitamins, minerals, and polyphenols to my body. I always had at least four varieties growing at any time, so imagine the goodness that I was adding to my meals and my body. I genuinely began to feel more energised.

There is something wholesome about growing your own food and microgreens are a fantastic addition to your windowsill garden. Snipping those tasty treats at dinner time, taking a moment to scatter, drop, or place the greens on the plate, whether to enhance its visual appearance, add crunch, freshness, or flavour, became such a mindful experience for me. I loved them so much that I took them on holiday to Uist in the Outer Hebrides.

It’s fair to say that microgreens are more than a garnish. They are tiny powerhouses of goodness, great for your gut, great for your health, and sexy as hell (can I say that)?
This brings me back to the title of this blog – Smorgasbord. I’ve sent some time in the last few years learning about gut health, nutrition, and mindfulness. I like to decorate my food with a variety of toppings (smorgasbord), that bring me joy, health, and a mindful moment. I’m going to name my toppings Smorgs, and I’ll be giving you some ideas over the next few weeks on how you can enhance your food, bring a smile to your gut, your mind, and your family. In fact, why don’t you get the family to decorate their own food by adding a tray or two of microgreens to the dinner table and letting them snip away. Add a dish of nuts, seeds, crispy chickpeas, seaweed, vegetable crisps, and that boring soup will be transformed into a bowl of happiness.

In the meantime, let me know about your journey to Teeny Greeny and I’ll be back soon with a lovely autumn soup recipe.
Yours (smiling from the inside) Kirsty
