Microgreens – What’s all the fuss about?!

“A fancy tangle of shoots to dress up second rate food” - “Just another health fad.” - “How can anything that small be so good for you?”

If any of these doubts sound familiar then think again, Microgreens may have hit the plates of the best restaurants around the world, but that’s because they pack a punch above their size.

Not only do Microgreens tingle the taste buds with their crunchy, munchy, peppery, aromatic, and tangy flavours, but there is a wealth of scientific research that supports their starring role on the health and fitness stage.

Although small and fragile by comparison to their older, larger relatives, Microgreens are denser in nutrients, antioxidants, and polyphenols. These building blocks for long term health are proven to boost digestion, immunity, brain health as well as protecting against heart disease, Type 2 Diabetes and even certain cancers.

Impressive huh? Well yes, especially when you can grow them all year round on a windowsill and harvest in less than 14 days! In fact, here at Teeny Greeny HQ, we are so keen to highlight these super greens’ superpowers, that we have created Microgreen Windowsill Farms that specifically target particular health needs. All you need to do is sow, water and harvest, but a little bit of love and sunlight would be blooming marvellous too.

Still not convinced? In 2009, a Japanese team of scientists proved that regularly eating Broccoli Microgreens reduced gut inflammation and infection in both mice and humans. Like all randomised controlled trials, this study will need further investigation, however the NHS Knowledge Service stated, “These promising findings are from a randomised trial, which increases the confidence in the results.”
